Our Own DoDo bird...

You thought the DODo bird extinct? Well, he showed up in our yard 2 weeks ago.

Let me explain.....

A male Robin started pecking at two of our bedroom windows, apparently he saw his reflection in the glass, thinking that it was another male bird that needed to be attacked!
This started every morning at 5:30 a.m.! All. Day. Long. This Robin jumped against our window, pecking with wings flying. The window was muddy and slobbered on for 3 ft up. (Do birds slobber? this one did...)

I pounded on the window to try to scare him, ran outside to make myself big with arms flying. I put rocks, a narrow planter and a utensil from my BBQ on the window ledge to deter him, nothing could stop him. From the inside of the window I put up mean, menacing looking items like patterned large plates, scary looking fabric. Nothing, nothing would stop this bird from his mission. Our window ledges were covered in bird poop, dripping over the edge, yuck... gross...

Well then, Willie got involved, this had gone on for waaaay tooo long! He got out the gun, just to shoot a few pellets and chase the dummy away, (it's only a bird). As it turned out, that too was only temporary. This bird meant business, that big guy in the window must be defeated! He really took his job seriously. He reminded us of race car drivers who go in circles all day long. (No offense to you race car fans).

This guy was a busy one, only stopping to rest at night when the bird suddenly was gone from the window, but every morning as soon as the sun began rising, the job starting in earnest once again.

After two weeks of getting woken up at 5:30 a.m. by this ferocious pecking, falling back asleep, then in 15 minutes another round of attack, we had had it with this DoDo. Willie got the bigger gun out, (the one from his youth). This time it was curtains, Mr. Robin was sitting on the plastic decorative fence in our yard, and BOOM! He was dead!

I couldn't believe it! Our ordeal was over! Our purty fence now has lots of buck-shot holes in it for future memory, should this situation ever grow dim in our minds.

There must me a Mrs. Robin who lost her partner, however, I'm sure that she tried many times to tell him, "it's not an enemy, it's only your reflection honey".

So now the window has been cleaned, the ledge scrubbed with soapy water. Nothing but a holey fence for a memory. Our mornings are calm and peaceful, only hearing the songbirds singing their morning songs. Like it should be....
